Vehbi Koç Foundation Sadberk Hanım Museum Tour and Openning Reception
Initially intended to display the personal collections of Sadberk Koç, the wife of Vehbi Koç, the Vehbi Koç Foundation Sadberk Hanım Museum opened its doors to the public on 14 October 1980 in the building known as Azaryan Yalısı in Sarıyer-Büyükdere district of İstanbul. In this building, examples of Islamic (primarily Ottoman) art; objects made in Europe, and the Far East for the Ottomans; and Ottoman-period fabrics, costumes and embroideries are on display.
In 1983 the Vehbi Koç Foundation purchased the Hüseyin Kocabaş Collection of archaeological materials for the Sadberk Hanım Museum. To house these new acquisitions, a restored mansion that stood immediately adjacent to the museum’s existing building opened to the public on 1988 as the Sevgi Gönül Wing. This new addition also received the Europa Nostra Award the same year as an outstanding example of modern museum architecture and design. Archaeological artifacts reflecting Anatolian, Ancient Greek and Roman cultures and civilizations from the 6th millenium BC to the late Byzantine period are exhibited chronologically in the Sevgi Gönül Wing.
